UPDATE: Julius Shulman

All you modernist architecture buffs fasten your seat belts because Your Mama had a few minutes to spare this evening between afternoon gin & tonics and evening nerve pills so we thought we'd toss up a few photos of the Raphael S. Soriano designed residence in the Hollywood Hills of the late, great architectural photographer Julius Shulman that recently hit on the market with an asking price of $2,495,000.

We could do without the ash gray bathtub, the harvest gold wall to wall carpeting and, let's be honest butter beans, the kitchen could use a little sprucing, but the dressing room is dee-voon, the dining room table and chairs are almost too much to bear–in a good way–and we'll take two of those glass orb table lamps in the living room please.

P.S. More photos of this modernist masterpiece can be seen here.

More like Kutsher's Country Club in the Catskills meets a Nightmare on Elm Street. But, that doesn't mean I don't love it.

You have to love SoCal. An original modern is in need of "rehab" and yet they'll take a house an average house, do a modern make-over and call it " a dramatic interpretation of the modernist concept".

It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-mid-century-bees-knees-marvelous, it's de-lovely!

But why is there a big bookcase blocking a living room floor-to-ceiling window wall and crowding a seating area? It almost looks like the moving men just sort of stashed it there.

It is EVERYTHING one could want. Including the spacious looking functional kitchen and that mahvelous gray bathtub.
Leave it alone.

Its LA. Anyone with 2.5 mill is sure to redo this whole place with an their gay decorators and designers. This will be the best garbage bin in LA when they start ripping out the interiors. The rest gets sold off at an LA Modern auction. Sad but true.

Yeah, the gold carpet needs to come out and a new (yet still clean lined) kitchen needs to go in but the rest is wonderful. Sadly, it reminds me of my grandparents' house in Dallas that was scraped for an overblown lot-filling pseudo Tudor/French/Whatever chateau that screamed, "Look at me, I'm big and expensive!" I hope someone this house falls into the hands of someone who'll appreciate it.

I shot his house a few days ago. Beware of the 2nd to 4th generation pics being hacked and sent all over. THIS tour has the originals.

Julius Shulman’s beloved home designed by Raphael Soriano has been put on the market for sale. Listed by Sam Heller, his nephew who has been a Re/MAX agent for many years. Sam’s extensive knowledge of the house is quite amazing and tells stories that are wonderful regarding Shulman and his 59 years there in this Hollywood Hills that was built specifically for him. Um, I realize this guy was a big deal and ditto on the architect, but let's be honest with ourselves: this place is UGLY! It looks like my grandmother designed the interiors and the outside is not so much "modern" as a boring box. And for over a million?! HA!
